Happy Thursday. We added to the Mobility EVo team with baby Jack last week, born on 8/18 at 9:10 am. Congrats John and Rebecca! Jack is a huge EV enthusiast and is looking forward to reading about all the cars at Monterey Car Week including Audi’s, Kia’s, DeLorean’s, and also Argo AI in Greenville, and so much more.

EV News
Since it is clear as mud, here is another Tax Credit explanation. Vehicles are still eligible for the full $7,500 credit, but the vehicles need to undergo final assembly in North America. Starting in 2023, the sales cap will be lifted but the credit will only be eligible for cars under $55k and trucks under $80k. The person qualifying will also have to have an income of less than $150k as an individual and $300k if filing jointly. 2024 will bring about additional requirements.

- Kia teases the new EV9 SUV.
- It’s all fun and games until a motorcyclist crashes into your $2.5 million Rimac Nevera on the way to Monterey Car Week.
- As rumored in last week’s newsletter, the Lucid Air Sapphire was confirmed at The Quail last week. The EV features three motors, carbon-ceramic brakes, new sports seats, and over 1,200 hp. The vehicle can reach 0-60 mph in under two seconds with a top speed of 200 mph.
- Ladies and Gentlemen, Car and Driver’s EV of the Year is here. Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 was named the 2022 EV of the year based on its fast-charging capability and low cost.
- Scientists think they may have a way to tailor charging protocols for batteries to optimize speed and efficiency, producing a 90% SOC in 10 minutes while not damaging the lithium plating and cathodes
- The Lucid Sapphire was not the only EV unveiled at The Quail. The 2023 Kia EV6 GT, the most powerful electric crossover, contains 577 hp and can reach 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds.
- Monterey Car Week, held from August 18 to 21, featured all the latest news on Audi’s sphere electric concept vehicles. Also, the carmaker displayed the EV Audi S1 e-tron Hoonitron. Audi displayed its vehicles at The Quail.
- The newly announced Polestar 6 has CEO Thomas Ingenlath thinking about bidirectional charging to feature in the vehicle, set to hit the streets by 2026. With bidirectional charging, dubbed “vehicle-to-load”, the Polestar would act as a battery backup during power outages, but could also send energy back into the grid during peak demand.
- Wait a minute, Doc! Delorean has unveiled the Alpha 5 coup EV prototype at Monterey Car Week. Sources report Delorean hopes to release the newest model in 2024.
- Oregonians can qualify for $15,000 in credits if they purchase an electric vehicle. Oregon already offers $7,500 in credits for state residents, but the newest federal bill offers another $7,500.
EV of the Week
I like concepts in the hopes that they come to fruition. It seems like concept cars are always exciting cars with crazy designs and eye-catching features. The EV of the Week is no different; with a sleek minimalist interior and exterior inspired by Korean architecture. I also prefer the idea of a driver-focused vehicle, which this vehicle does with its cockpit-like interior and floating center console for the driver. I hope to drive one of these one day and that’s why we chose the Genesis X Speedium Coupe as the EV of the Week.

AV Corner
Lincoln’s latest AV, the Lincoln Model L100h Concept, makes nods to the 1922 Lincoln Model L to celebrate the automaker’s 100th anniversary. The AV sits low to the ground and features a long and sleek design. The wild concept was unveiled at Pebble Beach last week.
In other AV News
- If you are in Vegas in the fall, make sure to check out autonomous Lyfts. After almost 5 years of testing, Motional and Lyft are ready to launch their driverless ride-share program in the city.
- If a vehicle is self-driving, human drivers in the UK won’t be liable if the vehicle crashes. Laws surrounding liability for AVs still have a lot of gray areas around the globe. The new UK laws might set the precedent.
- The UK hopes to have Level 5 fully-autonomous vehicles on the roads by 2025.
- GM and Ford have filed petitions to the National High Traffic Safety Administrative (NHTSA) to deploy Level 5 autonomous vehicles. To help the administration make a decision, it has called for public input on whether to allow Level 5 AVs on public roads.
- Argo AI opened its newest facility at the South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center in Greenville, SC. The $2.6 million investment will employ 40 people.
- Cummins will integrate Gatik’s autonomous driving technology on Isuzu Class 6 FTR model box trucks with Cummins B6.7 engine.
